Buckeye Mortgage Company of West Virginia, LLC was organized on January 30, 2001 as a retail mortgage broker, providing residential and commercial mortgage financing throughout West Virginia and the state of Ohio. The company is owned by Robert C. Mead. Prior to establishing Buckeye Mortgage Company, Mr. Mead served as president of American Mortgages, Inc., (“AMI”) Wheeling, WV, a mortgage-banking unit of American Bank Corporation. Mead served as executive vice president, director and chief operating officer of the $500,000,000 bank holding company also headquartered in Wheeling. American Mortgages discontinued operations in December 2000 as the result of a merger with Wesbanco, Inc.
Prior to the merger with AMBC, Mead served as president, CEO and part owner of Buckeye Savings Bank, a savings bank headquartered in eastern Ohio. Buckeye was for many years the leading single-family mortgage lender in West Virginia. Loan production offices were established at various times in Wheeling, Charleston, Hurricane, Parkersburg, Fairmont and McHenry (Deep Creek Lake), Maryland. In 1985, Buckeye became the first financial institution in the region to securitize loans with Freddie Mac, and the following year issued the state’s first collateralized mortgage obligation.
Mr. Mead is a graduate of West Virginia University and holds an MBA from Long Island University, a certificate in accounting from the University of California, Berkeley Extension, and became a Certified Managerial Accountant. He is a former president of the West Virginia University Alumni Association and past chairman of the Ohio Valley General Hospital.
